This week, we are pleased to share more about the community celebrations and student-led initiatives that have enriched our school life throughout February.

During yesterday’s Community Time, we celebrated the start of the Lunar New Year. We explored the diverse traditions observed worldwide. The true highlight was watching two of our Grade 1 students, Alyssa and Margot, step forward to share their own family experiences. When our youngest learners lead with courage, they remind us that a vibrant community is built when we intentionally listen to and value one another’s lived experiences.

Throughout February, our Equity & Inclusion Club (Grades 5–8) has been leading our celebration of Black History Month by highlighting the artistry, innovations, and leadership of Black Canadians.

A powerful example of this occurred during our February 4th assembly when Edward Griffith shared his family’s story as part of the only government-sponsored Black settlement in Upper Canada. The Davenports were leaders in the Wilberforce Street Settlement, established in 1819, and a vibrant community of approximately 300 individuals who benefited from land grants.

Through these learning experiences, we reinforce our responsibility to ensure every individual feels seen and valued. This work directly reflects our strategic priorities, as we strive to ensure that consistent, engaging learning experiences embrace and reflect the identities of all Montcrest learners. We encourage our students to practice active inclusion by intentionally seeking out and acknowledging the strengths of those around them, knowing that when we lead with integrity and celebrate excellence in others, we create a more vibrant community for everyone.

A reminder that our Equity & Inclusion Collaborative continues its vital work next week. This group of dedicated faculty, staff, families, and students meets monthly to consider educational opportunities, refine policies, analyze community data, and ensure our momentum remains strong (Wednesday, February 25, 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.).

Everything we do—from daily announcements to school-wide assemblies—seeks to advance our goal of building a deeper connection at Montcrest. We welcome your feedback as we continue this journey together.
