We are excited to celebrate the incredible journey of our students who travelled to New Zealand to represent Canada at the Kids' Lit Quiz World Finals. While the competition was a remarkable achievement in itself, the experience extended far beyond the quiz, offering countless opportunities for learning, cultural exchange, and personal growth.
Throughout their time in New Zealand, students immersed themselves in the country's rich history, traditions, and natural beauty. They visited the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where they explored the significance of the 1840 agreement between the British Crown and Māori leaders and gained a deeper understanding of New Zealand's history. During Māori cultural performances, students experienced traditional songs, dances, and storytelling, while learning about Matariki, the Māori New Year, and the importance of the stars in Indigenous knowledge and celebration.

Their learning continued through visits to Rainbow Falls, the Manginangina Kauri Forest, and the historic town of Russell, where they discovered stories of early settlers, missionaries, and one of New Zealand's first printing presses. A writing workshop with a celebrated New Zealand children's author encouraged students to think creatively, while an interactive storytelling session with the National Library brought local legends and traditions to life through laughter and participation.
These experiences culminated in the Kids' Lit Quiz World Finals, where our students proudly represented Canada, earning a fifth-place finish as the youngest team in the competition. Most importantly, they demonstrated curiosity, collaboration, and a genuine love of learning on an international stage.
At Montcrest, we believe that meaningful learning happens when students are encouraged to step beyond familiar surroundings, embrace new perspectives, and engage with the world around them. This journey reflected that belief in countless ways, reminding us that some of the most lasting lessons come through adventure, discovery, and shared experiences.
We extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Wichman for his leadership and dedication in helping create this unforgettable opportunity, and to the parents who travelled alongside our students for their encouragement and support throughout the journey. Their commitment helped make this remarkable experience possible.
Way to go, Montcrest! To see more highlights from the trip, explore our first Instagram post and our final trip recap.
